Hippocampal place cells firing contains information about the animals position. It was recently shown that this information can be extracted either from the firing rates of populations of neurons (population code), or from precise times of cell firings relative to the hippocampal theta rhythm (temporal code). In the talk I will argue that both of these codes may result from the cooperative dynamics of a network of spiking neurons with synaptic interactions reflecting the spatial relation between neuronal place fields. Some more general issues related to hippocampal theta rhythm will also be discussed.
